There are three possible sources of Vitamin D, solar radiation, food and supplements.

The body, when exposed to direct sunlight, naturally produces Vitamin D, this is the main source. A few minutes a day in hands, arms and face is enough to cover requirements.

In food it is found in two forms: ergocalciferol or Vitamin D2 (plant origin) and cholecalciferol or Vitamin D3 (animal origin). Except for foods fortified with this vitamin, not many foods contain this vitamin naturally.

People can be deficient in vitamin D because their direct exposure to sunlight is limited, due to not consuming or not absorbing enough of this vitamin from food, or because their kidneys cannot convert vitamin D to its active form in the organism. In these cases, supplements are an option.
